Revolutionizing surgeons' training for the highly complex Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) surgery! Our project partners at Balgrist University Hospital and Zurich University of Applied Sciences have developed an advanced Augmented Reality (AR)-based simulator and showed that it enables self-paced learning without the need for constant instructor supervision.
This breakthrough approach not only saves time and costs but also minimizes risks to patients due to a data-driven, instructor-independent training. In a feasibility study with resident and senior surgeons, the AR guidance system demonstrated impressive precision.
Figures: Three types of AR guidance were developed (from left to right): Overlay, Virtual Twin, and Sectional Views.
This groundbreaking AR simulator paves the way for safer, more efficient orthopedic training, empowering surgeons to track and refine their skills through a data-driven, independent approach.
